General CNC Machinist / Journeyman

The basic function of the CNC General Machinist is to complete all operations in a timely manner and to ensure that all work is completed and verified to the highest quality standard. Must be well versed in CNC mill and / or lathe operation, programming, and set up. 

Position Responsibilities
• Inspect incoming work for dimensional integrity and match the print to the job description.
• Machines pieces in accordance with work orders, blueprints, specifications, drawings, reference planes, location of surfaces, geometric dimensioning tolerancing (GDT), and machining parameters.
• Executes and records established and operator created programs on mills and lathes by setting tools, offsets, and tool compensation. 
• Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts – CNC mills and Lathes and grinders. 
• Creates, properly executes, and archives G-code programs.
• Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
• Calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and gauges.
• Maintains quality and safety standards.
• Work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors.  This includes assisting and training personnel when necessary.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on department equipment and notify supervision of non-routine maintenance needs.
• Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

• This position requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through a High School Diploma or equivalent; additional education is a plus.
• A minimum of five to ten years of experience setting up and operating CNC equipment including lathes and multi-axis mills and grinders.
• Previous experience in another machine shop in OD grinding, milling, welding, and basic maintenance functions is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required
• Knowledge of blueprint terminology and the ability to read and interpret prints for manufacturing requirements.
• Knowledge of G-code is required. 
• Knowledge of programming and operating an Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM) is preferred.
• Knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. 
• Basic understanding of metallurgy, chemistry and physics.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001:2008 manufacturing requirements or equivalent quality system preferred.
• Ability to create and store CNC programs.
• Ability to calculate fractions, decimals and conversions and to apply basic concepts of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
• Ability to set up and touch off machine tools for job operation.
• Ability to use various measuring tools to verify parts meet print requirements. 
• Ability to properly calibrate and use snap gauges and micrometers. 
• Ability to function with a keen attention to detail. 
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Must be able to work independently to meet deadlines and be accountable.
