The FSO Manager is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in planning and executing all activities relating to the Flint Symphony Orchestra, a 76 member professional orchestra-currently in its 102nd season. Responsibilities include an extensive array of details for a wide variety of performances. This position reports to the President and CEO, collaborates directly with the FSO Conductor and Music Director (who has a 30 year tenure), serves as a member of the FIM Senior Management team and functions as the liaison between the orchestra and the organization.

The Flint Institute of Music (FIM) is a thriving performing arts organization situated in the heart of the Flint Cultural Center campus, providing music, dance and theatre for all ages and abilities. Tracing its roots back over 100 years to the creation of the Flint Community Music Association, founded by J. Dallas Dort, the FIM has grown significantly and continues to build upon its rich tradition of excellence while evolving to meet the needs of area residents. Today FIM reaches more than 300,000 people annually through lessons, classes, outreach programs, performances and concerts through its three program areas: the Flint School of Performing Arts (FSPA), Flint Symphony Orchestra (FSO) and Flint Repertory Theatre (REP). Together these entities are dedicated to improving the community through arts programming that is available for all.

Position Responsibilities
• Day to day management of the orchestra. 
• Create orchestral schedules for all work in liaison with the Personnel Manager and Conductor. 
• Prepare contracts and payment documentation for players and guest artists. 
• Arrange guest artist travel arrangements and accommodations.  
• Attend all FSO rehearsals, events and functions. 
• Ensure coordination of orchestral auditions. 
• Book rehearsal and performance venues and liaise effectively ensuring the smooth running of all technical aspects. 
• Responsible for all technical and stage management arrangements including equipment and instrument hire, piano tuning, arranging additional insurances. 
• Any other duties as may reasonably be required for the smooth running of orchestral business. 
• Share an active role in day to day administration alongside all staff. 
• Coordinate logistical arrangements for all FSO projects and performances. 
• Work closely with designated staff in long-range planning for the FSO. 
• Develop and monitor the FSO budget annually. 
• Maintain appropriate cost controls while maintaining artistic integrity. 
• Process activity related invoices and payments.  
• Take an active role in the FSO marketing, audience development and public relations functions. 
• Provide specialist music knowledge for use with marketing campaigns and initiatives. 
• Attend and participate in fundraising events.  
• Attend and participate in all appropriate internal and external meetings. 
• Manage and collect regular content for the orchestra’s website and social media accounts ensuring that FSO’s online profile continues to grow. 
• Carry out any other duties as required.
Qualifications
• The position requires knowledge normally acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) in a related field from a four-year college/university or equivalent combination of work experience and education. 
• Three to five years of experience in orchestra management required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required
• Ability to lead multiple projects concurrently and meet all required deadlines. 
• Ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and manage own work with great attention to detail. 
• An enthusiasm and focus for working in a team but will also be able to work on his/her own initiative and make decisions and solve problems independently and effectively. 
• Willingness to work flexible hours according to schedule of events and performances. 
• Experience managing, supervising and training staff. 
• Ability to maintain a strong customer service orientation to internal and external constituents under high pressure situations. 
• Ability to interact appropriately with diverse groups including executive staff, board, patrons, donors and volunteers; discreet and able to maintain confidential information and exercise sound judgment. 
• Excellent written and oral interpersonal communication skills. 
• In-depth knowledge of orchestral repertoire and concert production knowledge of current trends in symphony arts. 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required. 
• Ability to handle the physical demands commensurate with an active administrative position and concert scheduling including lifting up to 25lbs. 
• Experience in negotiating collective bargaining agreements preferred. 
• Experience in Tessitura software preferred.
