The Flint Center for Educational Excellence seeks an experienced communications strategist to serve as the Director of Communications. In this role, you will work closely with our leadership and programming teams to develop and implement communication and branding strategies. Responsibilities include marketing research, messaging, brand development, planning, and content creation. We are looking for a creative individual with strong writing and editing skills who can produce persuasive content, manage goals and deadlines, and manage media relations. The Director of Communications will oversee all communications, marketing, and branding strategies undertaken by the Flint Center; and will report to the Chief Operations Officer and General Counsel. In addition to the following responsibilities, regular local and regional travel will be required.


Position Responsibilities
Strategic & External Communications
• Develop and implement a creative communications strategy that integrates our internal communications efforts across our six initiatives and cultivates and enhances meaningful relationships between the Flint Center and our target audiences, key stakeholders, donors, volunteers, and media. 
• Cultivate strong relationships with executive leaders at the Flint Center on our programming and strategic teams, to enhance the Flint Center's brand and fundraising efforts.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with media contacts and journalists.
• Monitor media coverage and respond to inquiries, ensuring accurate and timely information dissemination. 
• Draft press releases, media pitches, and other media-related materials.
• Manage projects delegated to the Flint Center’s external marketing vendors. 
• Manage vendor services for on-site projects, including photographers and videographers.

Internal Communications & Content Creation
• Oversee the development of organization-wide communications regarding the Flint Center’s initiatives, strategic efforts, and personnel changes. 
• Collaborate with the Chief Strategy Officer to craft compelling promotional and educational materials for legislative meetings, policymakers, and conventions, while also crafting clear and impactful messaging for the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Strategy Officer, and internal personnel for critical stakeholder engagements.
• Develop internal processes for elevating and completing external communications requests and conduct staff communications and meetings on internal processes. 
• Stay abreast of initiatives and activities at the Center by conducting research and interviewing employees, families, students, and community stakeholders to gather information for storytelling purposes.

Website & Social Media & Management
• Oversee all website content and social media strategy.
• Develop and execute a multi-site social media strategy to enhance brand awareness of our six core initiatives, engagement, and reach.
• Coordinate with site-based teams at sixteen sites to create and curate engaging content for various social media platforms.
• Monitor and analyze social media metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and make data-driven decisions.

Project Management & Special Event Support
• Work with departments, creative partners, and vendors to develop and implement communications strategies.
• Assist with production and mailing oversight.
• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project milestones are achieved.
• Plan, organize, and coordinate virtual and in-person events such as meetings, special events, workshops, and webinars.




Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field; master’s degree preferred. Experience and knowledge of the nonprofit sector and foundations preferred.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or journalism. 
• Experience with web content management systems, proficiency in social media management, analytics, and content creation.
• Experience in event planning and management.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

• Strong storytelling abilities with the capacity to tailor messages to different audiences.
• Familiarity with media relations practices and strategies.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, and Loomly. Understanding of the graphic design, print, and video production processes.
